Durban - The death of Umlazi businessman Mlungisi Chiliza has left his family devastated as they try to come to terms with it.

Chiliza, 44, was shot in a parking lot outside Umlazi tourist attraction Max's Lifestyle on Monday morning. According to bystanders, after being shot he entered the stylish township lounge, which was still closed for business, seeking refuge.

He died at the scene.

His wife, Mbali Chiliza, said he was a member of the Umlazi Business Forum and was the owner of Nkanini Construction.

She said the Delangokubona Business Forum chairman, Sibusiso Mnyandu, who was with Chiliza when the incident happened, was a friend of her husband, with whom he grew up. She did not know what their meeting on Monday was about.

She said the family were still in the dark about the killings and waiting for answers from the investigating police officers. "I do not know anything about this incident and there is nothing I can say at this stage."

The mystery death of the father of two had left his family devastated. "When the head of the family leaves it is not nice and the way he left us was brutal," she said.

The Mercury tried reaching the chairman of the Umlazi Business Forum, but had no response by the time of publishing. Police spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala said there were no arrests yet.
