Durban - Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and robbery after a shootout at the home of metro police boss Eugene Nzama on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said early information has revealed that four men allegedly broke into Nzama’s Durban home at 6pm, where they subdued two security guards and took their firearms.

The gunmen then opened fire on the pair of guards, wounding both, one critically.

Mdunge said neither Nzama, nor his family were at the residence at the time.

Numerous calls by IOL to ascertain if Nzama and his family had been removed to a place of safety were not returned.

The metro police boss is at the centre of several controversies with both metro police officers and members of the taxi industry, who have repeatedly called for his axeing.

At the crux of the dispute is the deadlock between the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) and the city leadership over allegations that include maladministration, corruption, nepotism, favouritism and harassment of taxi drivers.

In August, metro police officers staged a protest which saw the Durban city centre gridlocked for several hours.

Samwu and metro police officers who spoke on condition of anonymity said they had further strikes planned - in collaboration with the taxi industry - should their demands for Nzama’s firing, amongst other demands, not be met.

In June, Nzama was put on precautionary suspension, only to come back a month later after taking the city to court. The city has yet to formulate charges against him.- IOL
