Cape Town - A detective investigating the murder of Sinoxolo Mafevuka said jealousy was the motive behind her killing, allegedly by her boyfriend’s cousins.

On Wednesday, Constable Butiki Tshabalala continued to give evidence at the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court in the bail application of the two brothers charged with raping and killing Sinoxolo in March this year.

The 19-year-old’s body was found spread-eagled in a public toilet at the Blowi informal settlement in SST section near Town Two.

The brothers were arrested a few weeks later after cops received information that they were spotted at the scene of the crime.

Police also recovered a jersey at the scene, said to belong to the accused.

On Tuesday the court heard how the accused went on a rampage looking for the victim, two days before she died.

Tshabalala said when the accused and their cousin found the deceased the next day, they threatened to beat up her lover.

“She had spent the night with a man she met at a tavern the Sunday evening,” he said.

“They found her with this man on Monday morning and even wanted to assault him but he ran away.

“They had a motive to kill her and it is that they were jealous for their cousin who intended on marrying [the deceased]… they were angry.”

Sinoxolo spent the Monday night with her boyfriend, who left for work the next morning.

According to Tshabalala, Sinoxolo was last seen alive on Tuesday evening, looking for someone to go with her to the communal toilet.

The bail hearing continues next Monday.
