Johannesburg - Six men were arrested when police foiled a truck hijacking on the R25 in Olifantsfontein, south of Pretoria, on Monday morning, Gauteng police said.
Police, acting on a tip-off, spotted two men wearing reflector jackets trying to force the courier truck to pull over, said Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.
When police cornered the men, one pulled out a firearm and shot at the officers.
“The police returned fire, wounding him in the buttocks. He was taken to hospital for medical attention and is under police guard.”
A 9mm firearm and three vehicles - an Isuzu and a VW Golf and Polo - were confiscated.
The six men would appear in court soon on charges of attempted armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and impersonating police officers. - Sapa
