Vereeniging - Twenty-two abused pigs were destroyed and other animals were confiscated from a farm in Vereeniging, south of Gauteng, on Thursday, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said.

SPCA spokeswoman Leana Barnard said the pigs were infected with various diseases and some had developed skin conditions.

“The animals were not in good condition and were suffering, the most humane thing we could do for the pigs was to humanely destroy them,” she said.

Four dogs and nine puppies were confiscated from the farm and were taken to the Vereeniging SPCA.

Barnard said the SPCA would lay criminal charges against the owner of the farm. - Sapa
