A Flats mother says she fears for her child’s life at school after he was stabbed five times.

Elaine Sias, 43, feared the worst when a stranger called telling her that her son, Tyler, was lying in a pool of blood.

It’s alleged the 17-year-old was stabbed at Batavia School by a classmate on September 14, shortly before school started.

“I was at work when I got a call from a woman saying she has my son with her and he’s bleeding in her living room after he was stabbed,” she says.

“I didn’t know what to think and immediately rushed to where he was.”

Tyler was stabbed in the back just a few inches from his spine and his collarbone.

“The doctor said the person who stabbed him knew what he was doing.

“He missed his spine by a few inches, my son could have been paralysed.”

Now her son is too afraid to go back to school.

“I even found a screwdriver in his bag which he said was for protection,” adds the mom.

“I fear for his life at school. I don’t want to get a copy of his death certificate instead of his matric certificate.”

His father, Michael Leibrandt, 44, says the school promised there’d be a hearing and that the learner would be suspended.

Lieutenant Colonel André Traut says a boy was arrested but the case has been withdrawn.

“A 15-year-old student was arrested on charges of attempted murder and appeared at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 28.”
