Cape Town - Former Hard Livings gang boss Rashied Staggie is due back in court at the end of next month for the illegal possession of stolen whisky and cigars.

Staggie, Jayaraj Pillay, his son Michaheel Mahendra Pillay and Joao Paulo de Gouveia were arrested after being found in the possession of expensive stolen whisky and cigars near Century City in April.

They were arrested and later granted bail of R5 000 each.

On Monday Staggie, Pillay junior and De Gouveia appeared in court where the matter was postponed due to Pillay senior not being present.

Pillay senior was not able to attend as he underwent heart surgery last week and is currently recovering at a hospital in Pretoria.

Staggie was out on parole at the time of the arrest and, along with the co-accused, was charged with possession of suspected stolen property, which included bottles of Johnnie Walker Green, Cuban cigars and British cigarettes.

The alcohol and other stolen goods are believed to be part of a multimillion-rand shipment stolen from a container depot in Joburg.

The container was shipped from London and was stolen from the depot in Joburg on April 20 and contained goods worth over R10 million.

The goods were allegedly for the former Hard Livings leader’s 60th birthday.

They were all arrested after police receive a tip-off.

Staggie was released on full parole in 2014 after being in jail for 13 years for a burglary that was committed at the Faure police arms storage.

Their lawyer, Rooshdeen Rudolph, declined to comment after the appearance and reiterated that the matter was postponed.

The three accused appeared relaxed as they stood in the dock and a swarm of media followed Staggie to his car in hopes of getting a comment after the proceedings.

He left court hand-in-hand with his wife and posed for pictures with a Mercedes-Benz that was waiting to whisk him off.

The case was postponed to August 30.
