Cape Town - The vehicle involved in a Bonteheuwel shooting in which a family of five was shot was found abandoned in a street 850m away.

Magdie Abrahams, 52, his three sons and wife were shot on Wednesday in Jasmine Street, Bonteheuwel, by four men driving a black car.

The family were returning from a visit to Mitchells Plain when the men in the car proceeded to overtake and then fire shots at them.

Magdie was shot in the left arm, Ebrahim in the stomach, Masud, 14, in the knee and face, Muneer, 19, had his fingers shot off while their mother, Shireen, 50, was shot in the mouth.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident.

“It is reported the occupants of a black VW Polo randomly shot at the family’s vehicle. The black VW Polo was later found abandoned on the pavement in Rooihout Street, Bonteheuwel.”

He said the vehicle had been stolen in Deft last month.

Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert Daniels confirmed paramedics were called to the scene.

He said the injured were rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital for medical treatment.

The hospital’s spokesman Alaric Jacobs said Shireen and Masud were in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. Ebrahim and Muneer were stable in the trauma unit.

Speaking to the Cape Argus, Abrahams said his eldest son Ebrahim was driving the car when a “black Golf” indicated it wanted to overtake.

“Ebrahim moved to the curb to give the Golf the opportunity to pass. My sons and wife were sitting in the back seat. My younger son was still listening to Qasida (religious music) and had his earphones in. We were teasing him about the way he was pulling his face while he sang along.”

He said as Ebrahim moved to the curb, the black car drove alongside him with one person hanging out from the back seat aiming a gun at them.

“I was just about to pull out my phone and take a picture of him when the first few bullets broke the glass and hit us,” said Abrahams.

“It was the most horrible experience of my life. The man just shot at us for no reason. It happened so quickly, one moment we were joking around as a family and the next - there was blood everywhere. The bullet entered my wife’s left cheek and exited her right cheek. My sons are not gangsters, we are a religious family,” he said.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
