Schoolchildren joined residents of Mandela Park, Khayelitsha in a brutal attack on a suspected robber on Wednesday.

He was accused of robbing two Nomsa Maphongwana Primary School pupils of cellphones and money.

“A woman ran (from) her house and screamed for people to chase him. Residents gave chase, he was pelted with stones and was hit. He was dazed and he fell,” Cape Town photographer Phandulwazi Jikelo said, adding that the police had intervened.

Harare police spokesperson Nosipho Mtengwane said the man had been taken to Tygerberg Hospital and police were investigating a charge of assault but no arrests had been made.

The hospital said the man was in a critical condition. - Cape Times
