Durban - Police are investigating the murder of a metered taxi driver who was found with four bullet wounds to his head after his car crashed into a truck on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

Police spokeswoman, Captain Gay Ebrahim, said the body of Bongani Simelane was found on the back seat of his white Toyota Corolla just after the Orthmann Road off-ramp.

Ebrahim said the Toyota had been seen speeding down the off-ramp followed closely by a grey Corsa bakkie. Once the Toyota reached the freeway, it crashed into the back of a truck before coming to rest against the roadside barrier.

Ebrahim said the shocked truck driver indicated he saw a man get out of the mangled metal wreck of the Toyota, jump into the Corsa bakkie, which stopped next to the crash scene, and then sped off.

The truck driver discovered Simelane’s body.

He had sustained four bullet wounds to the back of the head and was lying curled up on the bloodstained back seat of the car.

Police said that Simelane, 50, was still in possession of his cellphone and wallet.

Ebrahim said while hijacking was a possibility, this has not been confirmed and the motive was being investigated.
