Johannesburg - The Glenvista High School teacher assaulted by a pupil said that he had forgiven everyone for the incident, a report has said.

The Grade 8 pupil was filmed by a fellow pupil attacking the teacher with a broom and a chair while his classmates can be heard cheering him on in the background.

The footage, captured in September, went viral.

According to EWN, the Joburg school said that the teacher was undergoing counselling, but was continuing with his work.

Governing body chairperson Michael Atti praised the teacher for the way in which he handled the matter.

“He says he's forgiven them all. The day after the actual incident he went into the classroom to teach and the bulk of the classroom apologised for their behaviour,” Atti told EWN.

“I think it's wonderful the way he's handled this entire thing.”

Earlier Atti had said that the pupil who assaulted the teacher and the one who recorded the incident had been suspended and that the pair’s internal disciplinary hearing would start on Tuesday.

Following an internal probe, 13 more pupils - who would also go through the disciplinary process - had been identified, he said.

“By (Wednesday), we’ll issue 13 disciplinary hearing notices to parents. Those hearings will start on Friday or on Monday next week,” Atti said. - IOL
