Cape Town - A 13-year-old girl in Caledon who allegedly stabbed her father to death during a quarrel is staying with her mother during her trial.

The teenager was released into her mother’s custody shortly after she reportedly stabbed her father to death during the quarrel in December, said Lieutenant Cyril Coetzee at the town’s police station.

In full view of her stepbrother and other onlookers, the girl allegedly threatened her dad with a knife before stabbing him in his side. He died in an ambulance on the way to hospital in Caledon.

There are over 300 young offenders between the ages of 12 and 17 awaiting trial in the Western Cape. Albert Fritz, the province’s MEC for Social Development, said gangs recruited teenagers to commit violent crimes as there was a perception that they would receive more lenient sentences once convicted.

The girl’s trial is ongoing.
