Cape Town - Schalk Burger Senior has finally spoken out about the attempted murder allegation against him.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Voice through his lawyer, the wine farmer says he never tried to kill one of his former employees, and that the man was actually drunk.

The father of Springbok star Schalk Burger has been accused of trying to kill a man living on his farm rent-free, by driving over him with his quad bike on Saturday.

Johannes Bitterhout, who was fired three years ago, claims Burger shouted at him to “f*k*f” off his farm, Welbedacht Wine Estate in Wellington, before ramming into him with the bike.

But Burger said on Wednesday that Bitterhout had been drunk and was lying through his teeth.

He says Bitterhout was so drunk that he fell over in the road and used Burger’s quad bike to help himself back up again.

Bitterhout was taken to hospital with a bleeding arm and bruises.

Burger’s lawyer, Fanie le Roux, said: “My client [Burger] denies that he drove over the complainant.

“He drove with his quad bike through the farmhouses and the gentleman had been inebriated and words were exchanged.

“The man fell to the ground and pulled himself up using the bike.”

Burger on Monday banned the Vice President of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa), Alvina Abrahams, from his farm after she rallied workers to protest.

Le Roux added: “She [Abrahams] incited Bitterhout to make a case while he was intoxicated, but police had to wait before they could take his statement.”

Police confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened against Burger but that no one has been arrested yet.
