Cape Town - A cold-blooded shooting in which a newlywed coupled were killed has claimed the life of a third victim.

Kim Roberts, 35, a fisherman from Ocean View, died on Sunday night in hospital.

Roberts and his neighbours, Leonardo and his wife Shannon Fortune, both 31, were shot by unknown gunmen on Saturday night while standing outside their home in Pypie Court, Ocean View.

Witnesses say two gunmen, “one short and the other tall”, raced passed and opened fire on the group.

As Leonardo and Shannon fled, the attackers chased after them and opened fire.

Leonardo, who was also a fisherman, was hit in the stomach, while Shannon was struck in the head. The couple died side by side at the scene.

The high school sweethearts, who tied the knot on November 20, have three children, aged three, five and 11.

On Monday, Roberts’s mother, who didn’t want to identify herself, said they were disappointed by news reports which claimed her son was a gangster and that he had been the target of the shooters.

The mom said: “The reports said my son is 21 and a gangster. But he is 35 years old, he was a Rasta and was a peaceful person.

“He was a family man who had children and a wife. He was a fisherman who worked for his family.

“[That newspaper] makes it seem like he was a gangster and the one who was targeted, and because of this we do not want to say anything to any newspaper.”

Roberts’s wife Magdalene was “too devastated” to speak.

Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said the motive behind the attack was being investigated: “We can confirm a man died in hospital due to his injuries, a case of murder is under investigation.”
