Ton of dagga found at border

Police confiscated dagga weighing more than a ton at the Maseru border with Lesotho in the Free State, police said on Thursday.

Sergeant Martin Xuma said police found 71 bags of dagga hidden in the back of a Toyota truck at 8am.

They were searching every vehicle passing through the border post.

Xuma said police became suspicious while searching the truck, because its wheel base was long, but its loading area was short.

One of the policemen went to his house to fetch tools and the back wall of the truck’s loading area was opened.

They discovered dagga weighing more than 1147 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R1.6 million, in a hidden compartment.

Police said the 52-year-old truck driver was arrested for illegally dealing in dagga.

Xuma said the driver, a South African, was on his way from Lesotho to Cape Town.

He was expected to appear soon in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court.

The truck, worth about R250 000, was confiscated. - Sapa
