Brits - A detective commander in Brits was arrested on Thursday after she allegedly stole stained money from the local police station safe and tried using it to gamble at a nearby casino, North West police said.

The colonel, 45, appeared briefly in the Mokgwase Magistrate’s Court after the Hawks arrested her at work on Thursday morning.

She was granted bail of R2 000 and the case was postponed to January 26.

In addition to the criminal charges, police have instituted internal disciplinary steps against her.

North West acting provincial police commissioner Jacob Tsumane welcomed the arrest, saying: “The long arm of the law will always catch up with those who think they are invincible.”

“We cannot have managers who are associated with criminal activities. Members are entrusted with a responsibility to ensure and manage exhibits seized from crime scene, not to pocket them.”
