Durban – A traditional leader was killed in a drive-by shooting on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Monday evening, the police said.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed that Inkosi Linda Sono Mathonsi was shot after he had picked up his daughter from the Sundumbili library in the Mandeni area.

The 57-year-old was shot in the head and neck while his 25-year-old daughter sustained a gunshot wound to the arm.

Mbhele said the daughter was rushed to hospital, but Mathonsi died at the scene.

She said the motive for the killing was not immediately known, but that 9mm firearms were used.

Further details could not be provided, but Mbhele said that police were still at the scene of the shooting.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs spokesman Lennox Mabaso said that the department would be issuing a statement on the shooting.

Mandeni is about 100 kilometres northeast of Durban and about 80 kilometres southwest of Richards Bay.
