Durban - The ANC-led tripartite alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has called on the national government to set up a national task team to probe politically motivated killings in the province.

The three-day summit held in Durban last week was attended by the ANC, Cosatu, SACP and the SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco). The call comes after a surge in political killings.

The newly formed National Freedom Party has lost 21 members since its inception in 2010, while the ANC has recently had three top officials gunned downed.

A fortnight ago ANC South Coast councillor Wandile Mkhize was shot dead. The ANC’s eThekwini leader, S’bu Sibiya, was gunned down in Inanda in July last year. Councillor Wiseman Mshibe was killed at his Montclair home in March last year. All their murders remain unresolved.

ANC KZN secretary Sihle Zikalala said the alliance called on police to establish a national task team to probe all political killings.

“We have noted with serious concern the assassination of ANC leaders which has robbed it (the party) of capable cadres,” said Zikalala.

The weekend summit also resolved to set up a commission to investigate allegations of corruption and fraud levelled against members of the alliance. - The Mercury
