Pretoria - The Tshwane Metro Police on Thursday swooped on the City’s fleet management department arresting six employees including the department’s director on fraud related charges.

The director was behind his desk at the department’s Boom Street offices when the metro police entered the building shortly after 2pm. The metro police were expecting to make a seventh arrest but the suspect fled.

Metro police spokesman Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahumba said the arrests were the culmination of a two month investigation.

According to Mahumba it is believed the suspects stole stole millions of Rand by submitting purchase orders for work that wasn’t done. The department is responsible for servicing and maintaining thousands of vehicles in the City of Tshwane’s fleet.

Mahumba said the suspects were at various levels of the supply chain and worked together to get approval for orders.

He said they were continuing with their investigations which would extend to some of the City’s suppliers. More arrests are expected.

The suspects were booked in at the Pretoria Central police station and are expected to appear in court soon.
