Rustenburg -Twelve people were arrested after they were found in possession of copper cables with the estimated value of R200,000 near Rustenburg on Thursday, North West police said.

“Boitekong and Northam police, together with mine security officials, apprehended twelve suspects aged between 18 and 55 for being in possession of copper cables today [Thursday] at about 5am on the R510 in Boitekong,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko.

She said police in Northam received a tip-off about a suspicious Toyota Quantum on the R510 and gave chase with the help of mine security officials.

Boitekong police were informed and the car was eventually stopped, although by this time it was near Rustenburg which is about 80 kilometres away.

“A firearm with six live ammunition rounds was found inside the vehicle. The suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court soon,” she said.
