Johannesburg - Two people, including a warrant officer, were arrested for allegedly plotting to kill investigators probing a top cop's murder, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Maj-Gen Tirhani Maswanganyi was a cluster commander in Johannesburg when he was murdered near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, in June.

“A docket of conspiracy to commit murder was opened in the Vaal,” Gauteng acting commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba told reporters in Johannesburg.

“Two suspects, 33 and 52 years old... were arrested and are in custody.”

The two were arrested on January 9.

The 52-year-old was a warrant officer from the Vaal. He faced charges related to a conspiracy to kill the police officers investigating Maswanganyi's murder.

His co-accused, the 33-year-old, had not only been implicated in the alleged plot to kill investigators, but was also allegedly linked to Maswanganyi's murder.

Both had already appeared in court on conspiracy to murder charges and would appear again in the Sebokeng Magistrate's Court on February 21.

The 33-year-old would make another appearance the day before, in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court, on a separate charge of murder.

This brings to six the number of people arrested in connection with Maswanganyi's death.

Four people, including three SA National Defence Force officers, were arrested last year in connection with Maswanganyi's murder.

Maswanganyi was found dead in a field near the R101, near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, in June.

His hands and feet were bound. A police patrol found Maswanganyi's abandoned Isuzu bakkie next to the road.

A police uniform and police identification card were in the bakkie, which prompted a search.
