PRETORIA – Two girls died when a shack caught fire in Senekal, Free State police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini, said they received a complaint at around 7am on Sunday, about a shack that was on fire at Thambo Square in Senekal.

“On arrival there they discovered that the two girls, aged four and six, burnt inside the shack. The six-year-old girl died at the scene and the four-year-old was referred to Dihlabeng hospital in Bethlehem with serious burn wounds where she later died,” Dhlamini said.

“A case of inquest has been registered for further investigation. A case of child neglect was also registered against the 27-year-old mother after it was discovered that she left the children alone and went to town to withdraw money for her church trip to Bethlehem.”

Dhlamni said the investigation was continuing.
