Durban - Two men accused of killing an ANC party agent during voter registration were arrested in Wembezi, near Estcourt, on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Police caught the men, aged 34 and 35, at their homes, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Sabelo Sokhela, 22, was killed while he was on his way home after voter registration on November 10. He had apparently received threats earlier in the day, said Naicker.

The men would appear in the Estcourt Magistrate's Court on Friday.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni urged Wembezi residents to trust the police.

“Those that are responsible for crime in the Wembezi area will be brought to book, but we ask that the community be patient while investigators follow the normal protocols in terms of their investigations before an arrest can be made.”

She appealed to locals to work closely with the police to address crime in the area.
