Mothibistad - Two men accused of robbing a policeman of his service pistol appeared in the Mothibistad Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Northern Cape police said.

Thuso Leboko, 29, and Rebaone Leboko, 23, would be back in court on March 4, said Lt Olebogeng Tawana.

Two men robbed a police officer of his firearm on Saturday at a supermarket near the Batlharos police station.

“Apparently the suspects opened the door of the police vehicle in which the victim was driving, grabbed him and forcefully removed his service pistol from the holster,” Tawana said.

One of the men then attempted to shoot the police officer but the firearm could not discharge a bullet.

“They fled the crime scene on foot into the village, and shortly robbed a local tuck shop at gunpoint.”

The men took an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and air time.

Two suspects were arrested in bushes in the area of Batlharos after residents tipped off the police about their whereabouts.

The men face charges of robbery and business robbery.
