Johannesburg - Two suspected robbers were killed in a shootout in Thokoza, on the East Rand, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

A police operation was being carried out on Wednesday evening after information emerged about a planned robbery at a shop and butchery, said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini in a statement.

“After the suspects realised that they were being followed they then started shooting at the police on Khumalo Road and the police retaliated,” he said.

“Two suspects were fatally wounded and six arrested.”

A Ford Fiesta reported hijacked in Jeppe was recovered, along with three pistols.

The six are due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court soon facing charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
