Johannesburg - Police in Limpopo have arrested two of the 13 awaiting trial prisoners who escaped in Modimolle.

“Two of the escapees were rearrested on Thursday. Phillip Phasha was arrested in Vaal Water, while Tshepo Lehong was found in Pienaarsrivier. The search for the rest of the prisoners continues,” spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said on Monday.

The prisoners escaped after sawing through the mesh wire of the exercise room at the police cells in Modimolle last week.

They had been arrested for various crimes including burglary, armed robbery and rape.

Otto said it was initially erroneously stated that 14 waiting trial prisoners had escaped.

“It has since been confirmed that 13 escaped, and not 14 as previously stated. The two will appear in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to face a charge of escaping from lawful custody each.”
