Johannesburg - A South African immigration officer and a Bangladeshi national - whom he unlawfully permitted to enter SA at OR Tambo International Airport - have been arrested, the South African Police Service said in a statement on Friday.

SAPS spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala alleged that immigration officer Andrew Aphane,39, unlawfully authorised 38-year-old Abdul Hussain's entry into the country by stamping his false passport on Tuesday August 23.

"The pair was arrested by the Detective Task Team based at the airport and appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on August 24," Mohlala said.

Aphane was charged with aiding and abetting Hussain to enter the country illegally. Hussain was charged with contravention of the Immigration Act.

The court released Aphane on R2 000 bail, while Hussain was remanded in custody until their next court appearance on September 2.
