Durban - A security guard and a hijacker were seriously wounded during a shoot-out in New Germany near Pinetown on Tuesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

“Four unknown armed men allegedly attempted to hijack a vehicle at a business place in Henwood Road, New Germany,” Colonel Jay Naicker said.

The men allegedly shot at a security guard who then retaliated.

The security guard and one of the hijackers were wounded in the shooting.

“They were both taken to hospital for medical attention,” said Naicker.

The other three suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.

The 39-year-old man was under police guard and a 9mm pistol was recovered from him.

He would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court soon.
