Cape Town - Siblings Marli and Henri van Breda, who survived a brutal axe attack at their home in Stellenbosch, were elated to see each other for the first time in nearly five months.

Marli, 16, and Henri, 20, were the only survivors of the attack in January during which their parents, Martin, 55, and Teresa, 54, and brother Rudi, 22, were murdered.

Marli suffered severe head trauma and a severed jugular vein after the axe attack, while Henri had scratches on his arms and was treated at the scene. No one has been arrested.

Although details of the meeting were not made public, family spokesperson Ben Rootman said they were happy to see one another.

Rootman previously said Marli had suffered retrograde amnesia, but could walk, communicate well and had retained her sense of humour.

In April, Marli was released from a rehabilitation care centre and placed with family friends, who she is still living with until the Western Cape High Court decides who she will live with on a permanent basis.

Legal curator, advocate Louise Buikman, appointed by relatives to investigate and make recommendations to the high court, is still compiling the report, said Rootman.
