Cape Town - Eskom CEO Brian Molefe’s son was one of the students who appeared at Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning in connection with the protest chaos at the University of Cape Town on Tuesday.
The students were protesting against a housing shortage at UCT which the Rhodes Must Fall group believes led to black exclusion and discrimination.
The protest erupted into chaos on Tuesday night, which culminated in police firing stun grenades and students setting university property alight.
Itumeleng Molefe and seven others face charges of malicious damage to property and were released on bail ranging between R1000 and R800.
The matter remanded to March 30.
Outside the court on Wednesday, Brian Molefe commented on his son’s arrest. “It builds character and it’s good for his intellectual development, so I hope he learns something from this,” he said.
Earlier on Wednesday Vice-Chancellor Max Price confirmed that the six arrested students had been provisionally suspended.
He said the other two people arrested were not registered at UCT this year.
