Port Elizabeth - Closing arguments in the Christopher Panayiotou bail application will continue in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Proceedings were expected to get under way at 9am.

Jayde Panayiotou's mother and sister were in court on Wednesday - the first time they have attended proceedings.

They were brought into court by investigating officer Kanna Swanepoel.

Seated in the second row, behind the Panayiotou family, they occasionally spoke to each other as journalists clambered for pictures of them.

On Tuesday the State and defence argued over information contained in their respective affidavits before closing their cases before Magistrate Abigail Beaton.

At the close of proceedings, State prosecutor Marius Stander was delivering his closing arguments.

Panayiotou's attorney Terry Price will deliver his closing arguments thereafter.

The main area of focus appears to be around Panayiotou's Cypriot passport and the possibility of him being a flight risk.

The State argued that Panayiotou was a flight risk because a Cypriot passport was issued in his name and that he was familiar with international travel having made more than15 trips overseas.

Price hit back saying that the State was flagrantly misleading the court about Panayiotou's Cypriot passport and that while the passport was issued, it was in the possession of the Cypriot Consulate in Pretoria.

Proceedings are expected to finish on Wednesday but it is unlikely that Beaton will deliver her ruling just yet.

Panayiotou, 28, stands accused of masterminding the abduction and murder of his school teacher wife Jayde.

It is alleged that Panayiotou paid his employee Thando Siyoli R70 000 for the hit on his wife.

It is claimed Siyoli in turn secured the services of Sizwezakhe Vumazonke to carry out the job. Both men have also been arrested.
