Durban - A 32-year-old woman from KwaMashu was arrested after allegedly abandoning her two-day-old daughter at the gate of the KwaMashu community health care centre.

The woman had given birth to the baby at the centre on Tuesday.

She is alleged to have left the infant in a box at the guardhouse when she was discharged. But she was seen, chased and brought back, and the police and social workers were called.

Centre spokesman Hlanganani Bhengu said it was not known why the woman had left the baby behind.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said that a case of child abandonment had been opened. The baby is at a place of safety while the mother is to appear in court. – The Mercury
