Durban - A woman is recovering in hospital after she was shot in the hand during a hijacking in Sydenham on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman had arrived at her Tarndale Avenue home in Asherville, when two men pounced on her as she was getting out of her Toyota Corolla.

They demanded the keys to the car and then a shot went off. She was hit in her left hand.

Sydenham Community Police Forum (CPF) spokesman, Satish Dhupelia, said the Asherville CPF had been alerted and rushed to the scene.

“They found that a lady had been hijacked. Her family rushed her to hospital. Although the hijackers and the vehicle had gone, some people suggested a suspect might still be in the house or area.

“One CPF member immediately went round to the rear of the house to set up watch while the other together with SAPS searched the house. No one was found,” Dhupelia said.

Dhupelia said the Sydenham CPF was aware the hijacking and shooting could have been fatal and were thankful that this was not the case.

He wished the resident a speedy recovery.

“Sadly we live in a society where violence and crime are now the norm and the innocent are victims. We also want to thank Sydenham SAPS and the two members of the Asherville CPF Sector who responded so speedily and rendered assistance.

“It is co-operation and the spirit of volunteerism such as this that will help make a difference to our lives,” Dhupelia said.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said a case of hijacking had been opened at Sydenham police.

No arrests have yet been made and police are investigating the incident.

The car was recovered in Mariannhill area a few hours after the incident.

Police said the woman had yet to give them a statement.
