Cape Town -

A Cape Town father spent hours on Monday at the bedside of his daughter, who survived a double shooting at a beach on Sunday.

Kelly “Kelz” Ruiters, 22, had spent much of Sunday at a jewellery store where she works at Canal Walk shopping centre.

“She went for lunch at around 4pm and never came back,” a colleague told the Cape Argus.

Her father, Jerome, on Monday explained that camera footage from the shopping centre showed her leaving the store alone.

But a boom camera at the exit of the parking lot showed her leaving in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by a man.

“It appears they drove to Strandfontein on the M5, which is the quickest route,” he said.

“She told me that when they got there another man got out of the boot, holding a gun.”

His daughter was then hit on the head with a gun and shot in both shoulders.

“But fortunately the bullets went right through her,” he said.

She was then “left to die” on the road but a passerby saw her and rushed her to hospital.

“We are so thankful for him coming to her rescue,” the father said.

A spokesman for Groote Schuur hospital said Ruiters was “serious but stable”and “awake” on Monday.

She had had a number of scans, which showed the bullets had not lodged in her body.

Her father said: “She’s doing well” – but he did not want to divulge any information which could hinder the hunt for his daughter’s attacker.

Police spokesman Andre Traut reported that “the circumstances surrounding an attempted murder are being investigated after a female victim in her 20s was shot and wounded at Strandfontein beach yesterday”.
