Durban - A young woman from the Point area appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday for attempting to kill her boyfriend and killing her four-month-old baby by pouring boiling water on them.

Thulile Mili Myeka was arrested last Tuesday in Glenmore.

On Friday, prosecutor Calvin Govender told magistrate Mahomed Motala that Myeka had gone with her son, Anele, to her boyfriend’s house in Glenmore on August 19 to get milk for the baby.

“There was an altercation between the two, when her boyfriend did not buy the milk for their baby. She then threw the boiling water on her boyfriend, and her child was also burnt. Her baby died in hospital from his injuries,” said Govender.

He also said the State was opposed to bail as Myeka had a previous conviction for assault, which the investigating officer needed to verify.

Her Legal Aid attorney, Virushka Mistry, said her client denied the previous conviction and intended pleading not guilty to the attempted murder and murder charges.

Her employers were sitting in the court gallery and they attempted to address the court. They wanted to know where Myeka would be held until her next court appearance.

The magistrate had explained that they could not address the court, but should instead speak to her legal counsel.

Mistry subsequently informed them Myeka would be held at Westville Prison until her next court appearance on September 2 for bail consideration.
