Johannesburg - Government will not tolerate any form of abuse, government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said on Thursday.

She urged all communities to be vigilant about their surroundings and report things that appear out of the ordinary.

“Let us play our part as citizens by reporting any suspected child or women abuse around your respective communities,” she said in a statement.

“It is time we stand up for our children and protect them against any form of neglect.”

She said government remained committed to ensuring that abusers of women and children faced the full might of the law.

“Families and communities must work together with the police, prosecutors, and courts to make sure that criminals are arrested and convicted of crimes against children.”

Williams said a recent media report of a Soweto grandmother who refused to send the grandchild in her care to school was disturbing.

“Government views this act in a very serious light. Government is encouraged that the Gauteng department of social development is investigating the matter, which should be resolved soon,” said Williams.
