Johannesburg -

Sixty-six ANC members in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, defected to the National Freedom Party on Sunday, the SABC reported.

The NFP was in the area to campaign ahead of the May 7 general elections.

The party's Gauteng chairman, Bheki Gumbi, told the public broadcaster the NFP was impressed by how people welcomed them into their homes.

“We were there to do a door-to-door campaign. We are happy that all sectors of the community welcomed us and we did door-to-door in different wards.

“We end up our rally in Mandela (Stadium) where we welcomed 66 members led by women's league members from the ANC.” - Sapa
