Administrative justice and accountability are only possible if action is taken to remedy issues brought up in recent investigations, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Wednesday.

“Diagnosing the problems and issuing reports is not where it should all end,” she told government and civil society representatives at the Ekurhuleni metropolitan council chambers in Germiston.

“It should not be over until the remedial action is fully implemented,” she was quoted saying in a statement issued by her spokesperson.

Madonsela discussed poor service delivery and the visibility and accessibility of government institutions. She said her office had set up a toll-free line and outreach programmes to create awareness and accessibility.

The protector's role was to reconcile the state with its citizens and ensure people did not have to stage violent protests to be heard by the government.

Last week Madonsela released a report that alleged maladministration and improper and unlawful conduct by the department of public works and the SA Police Service in the leasing office space in Durban. The 10-year lease was worth R1.16 billion. The release of the document came four months after an initial report into a R500 million lease for similar office space in Pretoria. She found the contract “fundamentally flawed and invalid”. -
