Cape Town - The African National Congress (ANC) on Monday said it was committed to fulfilling the goals of the African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063, working with the rest of the continent in tackling Africa’s goals.

“The ANC remains committed to working together with the people of Africa in order to achieve the AU fifty-year vision called Agenda 2063,” said Zizi Kodwa, ANC national spokesperson.

Agenda 2063 was the AU’s vision and action plan aiming at socioeconomic transformation over the next 50 years. It was developed in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank, and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) Agency.

“This is the African vision of building effective institutions, enhancing accountability, strengthening solidarity and integration, promoting gender equality, and promoting peace and security,” said Kodwa.

The reiteration of support by the ANC was in line with Africa Day, the anniversary of the formation of the now dismantled Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the founding of its replacement 14 years ago, the AU.

South Africa, under the new democratic dispensation, had joined the OAU in 1994.

Kodwa added that celebrations of Africa Day included echoing the call of President Jacob Zuma who, on Sunday, called on every South African school, church, community choir, and citizen to familiarise themselves with the AU anthem “so that we can sing it at all our important gatherings and celebrations”.
