The ANC apologised to the SABC on Tuesday morning after its reporters were turned away from the party's policy conference in Midrand, Johannesburg.

“The police didn't know that the SABC was broadcasting from the venue this morning and the media were not allowed inside,” African National Congress spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.

SAFM morning radio news anchor Xolani Gwala told listeners on Tuesday morning that he had to drive back from Midrand to the SABC's studios in Auckland Park to be on time for the show, which starts at 6am.

By 7am, the problem seemed to have been sorted out.

Mthembu said: “They were allowed in once the misunderstanding was sorted out. Everything continues as normal.”

The ANC's four-day policy conference opens on Tuesday with an address by President Jacob Zuma, who is also president of the ANC, followed by a closed plenary session.

Input would be received on three of the ANC's main policy documents: organisational renewal, strategy and tactics; the state intervention in the mining sector; and the national development plan and commission guidelines.

The second day of the conference would consist of commissions discussing the party's 13 policy documents. Commissions would report back on the third and fourth days.

About 3500 delegates were expected to attend the conference, which would not focus on the succession debate, the ANC's secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Monday. - Sapa
