Johannesburg - The African National Congress on Friday welcomed the declaration by the National Social Cohesion Summit which commits all stakeholders to hold more summits at provincial and local level, the ruling party said.
National spokesman Jackson Mthembu said the ANC called upon South Africans from all walks of life to ensure the declaration was always respected and protected.
He said the ANC would support all efforts that protected the human rights as contained in the constitution, regardless of their standing in society.
“We must all embrace the declaration so that at a time to come we can all say without any fear of contradiction that South Africa belongs to all who lives in it,” he said.
Meanwhile the Afrikanerbond said on Friday that the ANC had used the summit for its own political agenda.
The organisation's chairman Pieter Vorster said approximately two hours were allocated to discussions from the floor by participants, while the rest of the time was mostly filled by speakers from the ranks of the ANC.
“Despite the urgent and desperate need for national reconciliation, our initial misgivings about the programme, content and participants were confirmed with the ANC's abuse of this opportunity for its own political agenda,” he said in a statement. - Sapa
