Cape Town – The start of the eighth African National Congress (ANC) provincial conference in the Western Cape had been delayed by at least three hours on Saturday.

Scheduled to have begun at 9 am, the official proceedings for the conference were delayed due to a hiccup in the accreditation process.

The conference, which had been moved to Bellville after a lack of sponsorship forced the party to abandon the Cape Town Convention Centre as a venue, would see all regions in the province cast their votes for a new provincial executive committee (PEC).

The outgoing PEC members were chairman Marius Fransman, secretary Songezo Mjongile, deputy chairman Abraham Bekeer, assistant secretary Maurencia Gillion, and treasurer Fezile Calane.

During the week, the provincial Umkhonto we Sizwe MilitaryVeterans Association gave their backing to Fransman and Mjongile.

Spokesperson for the province Yonela Diko said the main business of the day would be voting, with members either giving their support to the incumbents for another term or choosing a new leadership.

He added that the programme would include Fransman’s political overview of the last term.

The conference would continue until Sunday.
