Barkly West - The ANC is there to serve, party deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said at a Northern Cape election rally in Barkly West on Wednesday.

“Trust the ANC, they will serve you,” Ramaphosa told a gathering of African National Congress supporters who filled a huge tent next to Kuruman Road near Mataleng.

“We are your servants; we listen to you,” he told those gathered at the dusty spot on the side of the road in a corner between two townships.

Ramaphosa said the ANC realised there was a problem in the area whereby poor parents had been asked to pay for their children's education.

“We heard that,” he said, before promising to fix the problem.

The crowd shouted out when Ramaphosa spoke of free education for children.

About half of those at the gathering were children.

Ramaphosa said the ANC had a plan to create work for the people over the next five years. He said the ANC would look at creating more jobs for Northern Cape workers.

Earlier, party organisers and vehicles handing out T-shirts were swamped by residents.

An announcer from an ANC mobile election truck shouted that those wearing the T-shirts should not take them off before May 10, when the ANC would celebrate its election victory.

Several people wore red T-shirts with the words: “Do it for Chris Hani, Vote ANC.” Others read: “Do it for Nelson Mandela.”

Ramaphosa said the ANC was the only party with wise people and leaders.

When ANC president Jacob Zuma talked they should know there was a “real man talking”, said Ramaphosa.

He described ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe as a man with “weight”.

Both were leaders of an organisation with a long history.

“The ANC was not established yesterday,” said Ramaphosa.
