Johannesburg - ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga wished all Muslims well as they start Ramadan.
“Millions of Muslims in South Africa and around the world begin fasting today at the start of the holy month of Ramadan,” Motshekga said in a statement.
“The practice of Ramadan is meant to purify oneself from thoughts and deeds which are counter to Islam.”
He said many Muslims went beyond the ritual of fasting and purged themselves of impure thoughts.
Ramadan is a yearly observance set to the Islamic lunar calendar. It lasts a month and includes a fast from dawn until dusk.
“We wish all Muslims well over the fast,” said Motshekga. - Sapa
