Ballot papers go missing in East London

East London - More than 1000 ballot papers were missing from a voting station in East London, an EFF official said on Wednesday.

EFF provincial leader in the Eastern Cape Themba Wele said the Economic Freedom Fighters had lodged an official complaint with the IEC provincial operations centre after ballot papers were missing from St Anne's Primary School in Southernwood.

“We are going to investigate the matter,” the IEC's spokeswoman for the region, Pearl Ngoza, said.

She would not elaborate, saying a statement would be issued when problems in the area had been resolved.

A voting station in Sunnyridge, East London, only opened after 9am but Ngoza was unable explain the delay.

Provincial ANC elections co-ordinator Mlibo Qoboshiyane said he had lodged a formal complaint with the IEC provincial operations centre in East London.

A number of agents were also turned away in the Emundini municipality area.

Voting in King William's Town and Mdantsane was going smoothly. As all the schools in the region were being used as voting stations, there were no queues and people trickled in throughout the day. - Sapa
