Johannesburg - Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi on Sunday vowed to fight corruption in all spheres of government for the sake of party supporters.

“The IFP has a mandate of ensuring the existence of corruption-free leadership in the next several years,” he said, addressing a rally at George Goch stadium in Johannesburg.

“I am here to ask for more of your support so that we can work together and end corruption.”

Buthelezi said that the “high level of corruption” within the ANC-controlled municipalities would only benefit those close to the ruling party.

The rally, which took place from Sunday morning, was aimed at thanking supporters for voting for the party in the May 18 elections.

The party's leader took a swipe at the ANC over what he called “going to bed with the National Freedom Party (NFP) with the aim of destroying the IFP”.

“The ANC was fully behind the establishment of the NFP financially and otherwise. The obituary of our party became the prominent feature because the doomsayers wrote our imminent demise. But the IFP still alive and kicking,” said Buthelezi, evoking loud cheers from the crowd.

The IFP won Ward 65 which incorporates, among other areas, Themba Khoza informal settlement. The party had two wards before the elections, but it lost Ward 61 to the ANC. - Sapa
