Cape Town - An 18-year-old teen in one of Cape Town's gang-affected areas celebrated his first vote on Wednesday, saying he was excited about the change his vote could bring.
Warrick Philander from the Lotus River/Ottery area cast his first vote at the Ebenezer Baptist Church.
“At first it was quite confusing,” said Philander. But, he said, the electoral officials were “very helpful” explaining the process and the different ballots.
“I actually feel proud of myself. I feel like I have accomplished something,” said Philander.
Growing up in Ottery, “on the flats” where gangs such as the Mongrels and Europa Katte have reigned for decades, Philander said he voted for the candidate he could see was committed to positive change.
“This candidate is really working for us,” said Philander. “That's what I can see as a teenager.”
