Port Elizabeth - Cosatu in Gauteng is confident that the ANC will secure a victory in the local government elections on August 3.

The federation’s Gauteng provincial chairperson, Amos Monyela, on Friday launched a scathing attack against the DA's mayoral candidates for the province's hotly contested metros, the City of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.

“We will not allow Herman Mashaba to be a mayor in Johannesburg. We will not let Johannesburg to be turned into the City of Cape Town. We are not going to allow Solly Msimanga to win. We are going to win Tshwane,” said Monyela, followed by loud applause from hundreds of shop-stewards attending Cosatu Gauteng’s Chris Dlamini memorial lecture in Johannesburg.

Monyela also warned members who were ward councillor candidates to perform and commit themselves to servicing their respective communities or they would be removed and replaced with those that could.

“If you are a shop-steward and you are candidate ward councillor and you don’t perform we will go to Luthuli House and tell them to remove you so that someone who can serve the community can be put in your place,” said

Although Monyela said the only party that could deliver on the labour front was the ANC, Cosatu was expected to lead a march through Johannesburg’s street against outsourcing, better working conditions, and an end to retrenchments and for an efficient transport system.

Hundreds of workers are expected to join and deliver memorandums to the Department of Transport, Woolworths and Telkom.
