Johannesburg - Cosatu in Gauteng has called on the ANC to fire non-performing mayors and councillors, saying its support for the party is not a “blank cheque”.

The remarks were made by the Gauteng chairman, Vusi Amos Monyela at a Gauteng shop stewards council in Johannesburg this morning.

“Corruption, poor service delivery and factions (are) our people’s problems with the ANC. Our people are losing faith due to corruption and factions. We call on the ANC to do the following: They (the ANC) must dismiss all non-performing mayors, non performing councillors, all corrupt (officials). If they don’t do this we are in trouble,” he said.

“We are not going to mask problems with service delivery. When you see corruption, arise. Our support for the ANC must not be a blank cheque. They must speed up service delivery. That’s what must happen. They must not try t resolve problems in offices, they must be on the ground.”

“There is only one tried and tested party (the ANC, and) we dare not desert it. We must continue to support them - but hold them accountable when they don’t do what we said they must do.”

He also called on shop stewards to defend unity and cohesion in the federation.

“We have the capacity to defend the federation. The best thing to do is for workers themselves to defend the federation. If someone criticises the federation on Twitter, 20 000 shop stewards must respond,” he said.

“We must dominate the radios, the print media - we must force them to write what we are saying.”

The federation also came out to say Wednesday’s anti-corruption march, being organised by expelled Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi among others, should not be attended by any members of Cosatu affiliates.

Instead the federation will be holding a march of its own next Wednesday.
