Johannesburg - DA leader Mmusi Maimane has announced they have entered into coalition agreements with a number of smaller political parties.

These include COPE, UDM, ACDP, Freedom Front Plus and IFP.

Addressing the media in Joburg on Wednesday afternoon, Maimane said the agreement sought to put the people of South Africa first more than anything.

He said they had not entered into an agreement with the EFF but welcomed their pronouncement on Wednesday that they would vote for the DA in Tshwane, Joburg and Nelson Mandela Bay.

Maimane said of the EFF: “It's quite clear that we would never agree on ideological issues ... that's why democracy allows for both parties to exist .. There is no coalition agreement between us and the EFF. I welcome fact that they say they will vote for us. We will be able to form governments in Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay.”

Maimane insisted that they would never compromise their principles in order to form governments.

The DA leader said they would not purge any municipal staff where they governed, and added that they would not appoint employees “on the basis of friends or political connections”.
